How the Calculation Works

Calorie expenditure is estimated using the metabolic equivalent of task (MET) value. One MET is the energy you burn at rest, roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour. During light-intensity pulldowns, your body works at about 3.0–3.5 METs, depending on the machine or band resistance.

The formula used is the standard ACSM equation:

kcal/min = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200

Multiplying the result by your workout duration in minutes gives the gross calories. To find net calories — the extra energy burned above what you’d use at rest — we subtract 1 MET from the activity MET before applying the formula. Worked Examples

Example 1: 150 lb person, 30 min of machine lat pulldowns
Weight = 150 ÷ 2.20462 = 68.0 kg. MET = 3.0.
Rate = 3.0 × 3.5 × 68.0 ÷ 200 = 3.57 kcal/min.
Gross = 3.57 × 30 = 107 kcal. Net = (3.0 − 1) × 3.5 × 68.0 ÷ 200 × 30 = 71 kcal.

Example 2: 180 lb person, 45 min of assisted pulldowns
Weight = 180 ÷ 2.20462 = 81.6 kg. MET = 3.5.
Rate = 3.5 × 3.5 × 81.6 ÷ 200 = 5.00 kcal/min.
Gross = 5.00 × 45 = 225 kcal. Net = (3.5 − 1) × 3.5 × 81.6 ÷ 200 × 45 = 160 kcal.

Notice how a heavier person and a longer duration produce a proportionally larger burn. The net values are about two-thirds of gross, which is typical for light-intensity resistance work.

Accuracy Notes

Limitations: MET-based estimates are population averages. Your true expenditure depends on muscle mass recruited, grip width, rest intervals, tempo, and how strictly you maintain form. The calculator also assumes body weight under load; machine-based pulldowns support your body, so actual energy cost may be slightly lower than a free-standing band pulldown.

For the best tracking, use the same conditions each time: same machine, same rest duration, and a similar rep tempo. Differences of 5–15% between sessions are normal and don’t indicate a tracking error.
