Formula Explained

Glycemic load combines portion size with the glycemic index to estimate a drink's effect on blood glucose. The formula is:

GL = (grams of carbohydrate × GI) ÷ 100

For example, a 300 ml glass of orange juice with 33 g of carbohydrate and a GI of 50 has a GL of (33 × 50) ÷ 100 = 16.5. Two glasses would double both the carbohydrate and the GL to 33. This is why GL is more informative than GI alone: GI ranks how quickly a carbohydrate appears in the blood compared with pure glucose, while GL accounts for how much carbohydrate is actually in the glass.

Why divide by 100? GI is expressed on a 0–100 scale, so multiplying grams by the GI percentage requires dividing by 100. A 20 g-carb drink with a GI of 60 delivers 12 GL units — equivalent, in glycemic terms, to 12 g of pure glucose.

Worked Examples

Cola, 330 ml can. About 35 g carbs, GI 63. GL = (35 × 63) ÷ 100 = 22.1, which ranks as high.
Whole milk, 250 ml glass. About 12 g lactose, GI 19. GL = (12 × 19) ÷ 100 = 2.3, a low value that makes milk a gentler choice for glucose response.

  • Use total carbohydrate from the label. Drinks rarely contain significant fiber, so net carbs and total carbs are usually the same.
  • Check the serving size on the label. A 1.5 L soda bottle may list nutrition per 330 ml; don't treat the whole bottle as one serving.
