Use the form to estimate calories burned per kilometer of bouldering. Because bouldering routes are short, measure "distance climbed" as the full length of every problem you complete plus the failed attempts you actually climbed. For example, if you climb a 4 m problem three times and a 6 m problem twice, your route distance is (4 × 3) + (6 × 2) = 24 m. Add any traverses, slap moves, or campus-style work in the same way.

Use active climbing time rather than the whole session. Resting between attempts raises the time denominator but not the climbing energy, so including long rests will make your per-km burn look too low.

⚙️ How the Calculation Works

The calculator uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method, a standard way to estimate exercise energy expenditure. Each intensity level is assigned a MET value: light bouldering around 4.5, moderate around 6.5, intense around 8.5, and a hard projecting session around 10. Calories per minute are calculated as MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg ÷ 200. Total calories equal calories per minute multiplied by climbing time, and calories per kilometer equal total calories divided by distance in kilometers.

Distance here means the total length of wall you moved across during climbing, not the height of the wall. It is the training mileage equivalent for bouldering.

Example 1 — Moderate session. A 70 kg climber completes 1.2 km of route distance in 40 minutes at MET 6.5. Calories per minute = 6.5 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 = 7.96 kcal/min. Total = 7.96 × 40 = 318.5 kcal. Calories per km = 318.5 ÷ 1.2 = 265.4 kcal/km.

Example 2 — Light session. A 62 kg climber covers 0.8 km of easy wall movement in 60 minutes at MET 4.5. Calories per minute = 4.5 × 3.5 × 62 ÷ 200 = 4.88 kcal/min. Total = 4.88 × 60 = 292.9 kcal. Calories per km = 292.9 ÷ 0.8 = 366.1 kcal/km.

📈 Factors Affecting Accuracy

Individual results vary with body composition, climbing economy, experience, and how much time you spend hanging versus moving. Overhanging terrain raises heart rate and muscle tension, while slab climbing rewards balance and may burn less. Route grade also matters: a V0 lap is very different from a V6 project.
