How the Estimate Is Calculated

Potassium numbers in this calculator come from approximate values in the USDA FoodData Central database for commonly used juices and mixers. The calculation assumes a simple proportional relationship: if a juice contains about 200 mg of potassium per 100 ml, then 50 ml supplies 100 mg, and 180 ml supplies 360 mg. For each of the three mixer rows, the tool converts fl oz to milliliters (1 fl oz = 29.5735 ml), multiplies the volume by the ingredient's potassium density, and adds the contributions together.

The Daily Value for potassium used by the FDA for nutrition labeling is 4,700 mg per day for adults. This tool expresses results as a percentage of that value, but individual needs vary with age, kidney function, medications, and medical conditions. The low, moderate, and high categories are based on approximate per-drink thresholds of under 200 mg, 200 to 400 mg, and above 400 mg.
